Heart of Hawick

2008 Edinburgh Architectural Association Design Awards - Regeneration and Conservation Award

Date of award: February 2008

Our second award, for Regeneration and Conservation, was in the 2008 Edinburgh Architectural Association Design Awards.

This was very welcome particularly as we were competing against some substantial projects with big investments and some innovative and large scale projects. Reviewing the three other short listed projects was illuminating, with some appearing to be more impressive in terms of scale and impact than HoH, meaning some very real competition for the hearts and minds of any judge who were comparing some beautiful pieces of work. Just to be compared against such projects was in itself a very real compliment.

The award recognised the sense of excitement, accessibility and functionality of the design, and in linking such vibrancy to the complimentary aim of regeneration and conservation, meant that the project fulfilled and exceeded the criteria.

The judging visit on 26 January comprised a panel of five people, and while the panel had a number of sites to see in their judging day, and were only on site around 40 minutes, they left with a hugely positive impression, and as it turned out, with a view that heart of Hawick was the best project they’d seen in terms of regeneration and conservation.
