Heart of Hawick

Kelso Living Room project

with Edenside Primary School

September – October 2009

A partnership project with Scottish Borders Council Arts Development. Two primary 7 classes from Edenside Primary School visited the Heritage Hub and worked with original documents to discover more about the history of Kelso’s built environment. Pupils worked with maps and engraved bills from 19th-century businesses to find out what the town centre of Kelso was like in the past.

Back in the classroom the pupils worked with artist Jane Gaze to create 2-D and 3-D artworks, to build on their work at the Heritage Hub. As well as designing their own billheads for imaginary businesses (incorporating drawing and PC skills) they created a series of clay plaques celebrating Kelso’s past businesses, using authentic Vicotrian founder’s type to impress the letters on the clay. The plaques were fired at 1240 degrees, so that they can withstand the elements.

The children’s artworks, along with reproductions of the original Heritage Hub material, are currently on display at the Wee Gallery in the Knowes Car Park in Kelso. The exhibition runs until 20 August 2009.
