Heart of Hawick

What are Archives?

Pilot Education Pack

February 2007

P3/4 and P6/7 pupils from Denholm Primary School were invited to be the first school in the area to visit the new Heritage Hub.

The Education and Outreach Assistant and local Art Teacher from Hawick High School worked with the pupils to explore the theme ‘What are Archives?’ prior to the opening of the new resource. Pupils visited Drumlanrig’s Tower Visitor Centre to explore the past of former pupil; Jane Dodds, who had attended their school in 1897.

Pupils used school log books, registers, maps and objects from the museum collection to look at school life from the past. They then decided to research the family tree of Jane Dodds. They compiled a collage for their classroom wall and each week added a member of the family, using Old Parish Records, Census Returns and Birth, Marriage and Death Certificates.

The pupils were then invited to be the first school group to visit the Heritage Hub before it opened to the public in May 2007.
