Using the catalogue
We have both a quick reference index to our catalogues, census indexes and more detailed archive catalogues available to the public in the search room. A member of staff will always be available to help with using the catalogue.
Information about some of the archive collections we hold is available on the Scottish Archive Network website.
Our collections cover the geographical area of the former counties of Berwickshire, Peeblesshire, Roxburghshire and Selkirkshire. We hold the council records for these areas as well as the former Borders Regional Council.
The archive also provides resources for family and local history including:
- Census returns (on microfilm)
- Monumental Inscriptions
- School Log Books/Admission Registers (available in digital format)
- Parish Records (on microfilm)
- Council Records
- Police Records
- Local newspapers (on microfilm)
- Poor law records (available in digital format)
Our collections also include the records of local businesses. We have collections from Sanderson & Murray Ltd of Galashiels and Walter Ballantyne & Son, Provision Merchants and also Aimers McLean and Co.
We also hold unique materials such as personal correspondence providing a fascinating insight into the past. In future our catalogues will be available online.
