Friday 10 to Sunday 12 September is the weekend to put in your diary for the first Alchemy Film and Moving Image Festival in the Scottish Borders. Based at Tower Mill, Heart of Hawick – a multi-award winning culture-led regeneration project - the 2010 Festival promises to bring you three thought provoking days packed with premieres and special events, all around the theme of landscape and transformation.

In this our first year, we have the Borders premiere of ‘The Edge of Dreaming’ (Best of Fest at Edinburgh International Film Festival and winner of the special ‘Mirror’ contest at Kiev International Film Festival) from Borders’ own film-maker, Amy Hardie. There’s also some of the best of UK artists’ film including Matthew Dalziel and Louise Scullion, Matt Hulse, Alastair Cook, Matt Lloyd, Richard Ashrowan and Ben Rivers. Three separate hour-long programmes will feature over twenty experimental films selected from submissions by local, national and international artists. Many of them will be attending the Festival so you can ask questions about the behind the scenes secrets of film-making.

The range of films and events is a first for the Borders: Friday starts with “Cinema in the Past”, a workshop for schools, and a specially curated programme of archive film treasures from the Scottish Screen Archive at the National Library of Scotland. There’s a young people’s feature film choice on Saturday selected by VOMO (Voice of My Own) youth film-making project as well as a rolling programme of artists’ films. Watch out for films throughout the town too, with screenings by Hawick Film & Video Group and the Little Theatre Film Club as well as short artists’ films in unexpected and off-beat places. Sunday will be packed with feature length and short films including the premier of ‘The Edge of Dreaming’ and ends with music and socialising at Beanscene in Tower Mill.

So whether you want to get close to Amy Hardie’s remarkable meditation on dreaming, or you want to sample the best in film-making about Scotland’s exquisite landscape heritage, come along to Alchemy in September. Hawick is a day trip from Edinburgh and Newcastle – or why not spend the weekend in the area: VisitScotland’s Visitor Information Centre is part of the Heart of Hawick campus and will be happy to help with any accommodation enquiries: Tel 01450 360688.

PLEASE SEE SEPERATE ENTRIES FOR FURTHER INFORMATION ON EACH EVENT DURING THE FESTIVAL.

A limited number of weekend tickets are available at £15. Single tickets are generally £3 unless they are stated as being free.
